Water has been used therapeutically for thousands of years, and modern aquatic therapy harnesses the unique physical properties of water to create an ideal rehabilitation environment. At NeoLife Physical Therapy's D'Iberville flagship location, we offer aquatic therapy as part of our comprehensive treatment approach.
Aquatic therapy leverages several properties of water that make it ideal for rehabilitation. Buoyancy reduces the effective weight bearing on joints — in chest-deep water, you bear only about 25% of your body weight. This allows patients to perform exercises and movements that would be too painful or difficult on land.
Hydrostatic pressure — the pressure exerted by water on the body — provides natural compression that reduces swelling and improves circulation. The warmth of the therapy pool (typically 92-94°F) relaxes muscles, decreases pain, and increases tissue flexibility. Water's viscosity provides natural resistance that can be adjusted simply by changing the speed or direction of movement.
Aquatic therapy is particularly beneficial for patients recovering from joint replacement surgery, those with arthritis or chronic pain conditions, athletes rehabilitating from lower extremity injuries, individuals with neurological conditions, and patients who are unable to tolerate land-based exercise due to pain or weight-bearing restrictions.
At NeoLife, aquatic therapy sessions are conducted one-on-one with your physical therapist, just like our land-based sessions. Your therapist is in the water with you, providing hands-on guidance, monitoring your form, and progressively challenging your program as you improve.
Aquatic therapy is currently available at our D'Iberville flagship location. To find out if aquatic therapy is right for you, call NeoLife Physical Therapy at (228) 280-8120 to schedule your evaluation.
